Turrican New, Facts and Rumours

The SETA (Search for Turrican Alternatives) is there to list all games, old and new, that feel like Turrican.

S.E.T.A.-Sections:  SETA  Available Turricans / Screenshots  Unofficial Turricans and Clones

The things that made Turrican so great for me (except great graphics and sound) were...
  • the landscape seemed "alive" - with water, hills, wind and many lovely detaills
  • there wasnīt only one way - you were free to explore huge levels
  • many, many secrets

Since the SETA has grown quite big, it now is divided in four sections:
Turrican Alternatives (this page)
Available Turricans
In development
Unofficial appearances of Turrican

I want YOU for S.E.T.A. !!

Castlevania - Symphonie of the Night (Playstation)
If you like Turrican you will love this game. A bit boring at the start, but it really has a great gameplay, sound and graphics. It also contains some RPG elements.

Play it, you wonīt regret. But maybe you canīt stop anymore ;)

Super Metroid (SuperNES)
Very, very similar to Turrican (itīs even possible to morph to a wheel!). Looks and feels very good.
It also should be mentioned that the original Metroid (NES) shall have inspired the developer(s) of Turrican !

Jim Power (Amiga)
The Sprite looks and moves similar to Turrican, the music was done by Chris Hülsbeck and it has great graphics (fantastic parallax scrolling!).
Sadly it lacks a bit in gameplay and is quite linear. There are even flight sequences - just like in Turrican.

Dony by Loriciel in 1992, the game wasnīt a commercial success - although it got good ratings in the magazines.

BTW: get the Soundtrack

Alisia Dragoon (Megadrive)
[Tip and text by Carlo Savorelli]
Alisia is a sadly overlooked game, but it's truly something. Apart from the first stage, that is quite straightforward, the stages are big, not exactly huge mazes, but still plenty of hidden rooms and secret passages. At a certain point, you venture inside caverns and eventually reach the interior of a giant spacecraft, that reminded me of Turrican's final giant tower.

Interesting: Her main attack really resembles Turrican's energy whip.

Lionheart (Amiga)
Lacks in weapons (only swords) but also a great game (with the best graphics ever seen on A500!)

Gods & Magic Pockets (Amiga + PC + SNES)
Both from
The Bitmap Brothers (and using the same engine), featuring excellent graphics, dozens of enemies, tons of extras and a very deep gameplay - but a lot harder than Turrican.

True classics.

The First Samurai (C64, Amiga, SNES, Megadrive, PC)
[Tip and text by
Benjamin Claridge]
The First Samurai on the c64 and Amiga has a very similar feel to Turrican - wonderful GFX and level design, as well as a feeling of freedom and space. The enemies are plentiful and always keep you on your toes. The only thing lacking is a true weapons power-up system, but it makes up for this with a wonderful storyline and puzzles / tasks to complete.

MegaMan Series (various Systems)
Especially Megaman X quite reminds me of Turrican.

Mr. Nutz (Amiga)
Made by NEON (this team contains Peter Thierolf, the Turrican 3-Programmer), which were once asked to make
Turrican 4, this is a fast game with a very good gameplay. It features nice gfx, many parallax-layers and uses the TFMX-Soundsystem also used in Turrican. It seems a bit odd at the start (especially the story/map-mode), but later on you even may fly, if youīre good enough with your joystick.

Assasin (Amiga)
[Tip by
Markus Pfeifer]
Team17´s best Platformer, features huges levels with many secrets, less enemies and smaller (but original) weapon, but plays like Turrican.
There´s also a special Edition, which isn´t as good as the original.

Rendering Ranger / Targa (SNES, only released in Japan)
Gigantic weapons, explosions and more bosses then normal enemies describes it quite good. Sadly it is hard as hell and very, very, linear. But beside the first level it looks great and feels a bit like Turri.
No wonder - it was created by Manfred Trenz, Turricanīs creator. Especially the flight-sequences later in the game are more then worth a look.
I just wonder why it was released only in Japan.

RuffīnīTumble (Amiga)
[Tip by Christian Uceda]
Great and detailled grafics, a heavy-metal-soundtrack and nice gameplay. Especially the later levels are quite big. Itīs a good bit harder and more hectic then Turrican, because you start with a little gun which only does few damage - and the extra weaponsī shots are limited.

Land Of Genesis (AGA-Amigas)
[Tip by Jan Schulze]
Quite new Turrican inspired (commercial) shooter. Nice graphics, but the sounds (at least in the demo) are cruel.
Download Demo
(Demo runs fine with WinUAE/Kick3.0 and WB3.1)

Wolfchild (Amiga, Megadrive, Master System, Mega-CD and Snes)
[Tip by Carlo Savorelli]
Also a classic game by Core design, which got ported to many platforms. Lacks a bit in Firepower, a bit hard, but really nice with beautiful levels.

Games that didnīt make it

Metal Slug - too linear
Xain dīSleena - much too linear (quite interesting, Hero and weapons remind much of Turri)
Cybernator / Assault Suit: Vulcan (SNES) - cool game but simply not like Turrican
Legacy of Kain - SoulReaver (PC, PSX, DC) ( Thatīs nearly the way I wouldīve imagined T3D ) Screenshots:1-2-3-4
Contra Series (SNES, NES, Arcade, Megadrive, Gameboy) - to linear (Note: Contra 2 (GB) was developed by Factor5!)
Psycho-Nics Oscar - also being an official inspiration for Turrican, it contains some features, but the gameplay isn´t really interesting
The Killing Game Show - was quite a time in the SETA but got voted out
Abuse - was quite a time in the SETA but got voted out
